A Culinary Odyssey Through California: From Los Angeles’ Vibrancy to the Tranquil Santa Ynez Valley

Every unforgettable journey deserves a magnificent prelude, and for us, our grand 2010 culinary adventure began right at home, in the most celebratory fashion imaginable: with effervescent champagne and briny, fresh oysters. This exquisite pairing holds a special place in our hearts, echoing a cherished memory from nearly five years prior, the morning after our wedding, shared at the iconic Balthazar in New York. It’s a tradition that perfectly encapsulates joy and indulgence, setting the stage for the gastronomic delights that lay ahead as we embarked on an epic exploration of California’s diverse landscapes and flavors.
Last Friday marked the commencement of a much-anticipated long weekend getaway, a meticulously planned escape designed to awaken the senses and satiate our wanderlust. Our initial feast was a symphony of flavors: a dozen and a half succulent oysters, accompanied by a bottle of crisp Piper Heidsieck champagne, a creamy wedge of Tomme de Savoie cheese, crunchy Marcona almonds, a vibrant salt-roasted beet salad with tangy goat cheese and toasted walnuts, and freshly grilled flatbread generously topped with sweet grapes and just the right amount of melted cheese. This homemade spread was more than just a meal; it was a joyous celebration of good food, good company, and the exciting prospect of new discoveries waiting for us across California.
Exploring Los Angeles: Hidden Gems and Thai Delights
The following morning, with our appetites whetted and spirits high, we began our northward journey towards Solvang. Our first major stop was in the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles, a city renowned for its diverse culinary landscape and innovative dining scene. For dinner, we sought out Ganda, an authentic Thai restaurant that had recently garnered high praise in the March issue of Saveur magazine. James Oseland, the magazine’s esteemed editor-in-chief, had raved about Ganda, reportedly visiting the establishment five days in a row during a recent trip to LA, all for one exceptional dish: the pla duk pad ped. This crispy catfish, dry-braised to perfection with aromatic galangal, fragrant Kaffir lime leaves, and a generous medley of traditional Thai spices, was declared his absolute favorite dish in all of Los Angeles, an endorsement that certainly piqued our curiosity.
Naturally, our expectations were sky-high, and Ganda did not disappoint. While I might not emulate Oseland’s five-day streak, the pla duk pad ped was indeed a culinary revelation – a harmonious blend of perfectly crispy texture and intensely flavorful, complex spices that lingered delightfully on the palate. Beyond this signature dish, every item we ordered was a testament to the restaurant’s authentic Thai craftsmanship and dedication to fresh ingredients. The vibrant curries, refreshing salads, and perfectly balanced stir-fries made for an unforgettable dining experience. It was the kind of food you could happily savor all night long, a true highlight of our Los Angeles culinary exploration that showcased the city’s incredible ethnic food scene.
During our time in Los Angeles, we were fortunate to stay at the Buky House, a charming Bed and Breakfast nestled in what we believe was the vibrant La Brea neighborhood. This inviting establishment offered a warm, homely atmosphere with beautifully appointed rooms and a welcoming host, providing a peaceful respite from the city’s bustling energy. Its unique character and attentive hospitality made our stay exceptionally comfortable, adding another layer of enjoyment to our urban exploration before we ventured into California’s wine country.

Discovering the Danish Charm of Solvang, California
Our journey continued north, leading us to the picturesque town of Solvang, a truly unique destination often referred to as ‘California’s Little Denmark.’ This enchanting village transports visitors straight to a quaint Danish town with its distinctive half-timbered architecture, charming windmills that dot the skyline, and streets lined with European-style bakeries and boutique shops. It’s a delightful cultural immersion, perfect for those seeking a charming escape from the ordinary and a taste of European heritage right in the heart of California.

Strolling through downtown Solvang was an absolute joy, and it was clear that even our little one, Rebeka, thoroughly enjoyed cruising the charming streets. The town’s atmosphere is incredibly welcoming and family-friendly, making it a perfect destination for all ages looking for a relaxed, scenic experience. Solvang is particularly famous for its abundance of authentic Danish bakeries, each offering an array of traditional specialties. We found ourselves drawn to Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery on Mission Drive, where we indulged in their delectable kringle and classic cheese danish. The kringle, a large pretzel-shaped pastry often adorned with various fillings, was flaky and sweet, while the cheese danish offered a perfect balance of rich, creamy cheese and delicate pastry – treats so authentic, it felt like a little piece of Denmark had been transported to California.

For lunch during our stay, we embraced the casual and charming picnic culture so prevalent in the Santa Ynez Valley. On one day, we picked up delicious, freshly made sandwiches from The Chef’s Touch in Solvang. The next, our destination was Panino in Los Olivos, known for its gourmet, generously filled sandwiches using high-quality ingredients. The area around Solvang boasts numerous picturesque patches of grass, ideal for spreading a blanket, alongside countless vineyards with gently rolling hills, creating an idyllic backdrop for a leisurely outdoor meal. These spontaneous picnic moments, surrounded by California’s natural beauty, were truly some of the most memorable and relaxing parts of our trip.

Another absolute must-try culinary experience in Solvang is Arne’s Famous Aebleskivers. These delightful Danish pancake-like donut holes, traditionally served hot, are drizzled with sweet raspberry jam and dusted generously with powdered sugar. You can enjoy them dine-in at Arne’s charming restaurant or grab them fresh from their convenient walk-up window on the street, perfect for a treat on the go. Each bite is a warm, fluffy explosion of sweet and tart flavors, offering a comforting taste of Danish heritage and an essential part of the Solvang experience that captures the essence of traditional Danish comfort food.

For our accommodation in Solvang, we chose the excellent Hotel Corque. This stylish and modern hotel offered a perfect blend of contemporary comfort and local charm, providing a luxurious yet welcoming base from which to explore the Danish village and the wider Santa Ynez Valley. Its central location, elegant design, and inviting amenities made our stay particularly enjoyable and convenient, ensuring a restful night after days filled with exploration and culinary delights.
Wine Country Wonders: Los Alamos, Los Olivos, and the Santa Ynez Valley
Where I could truly envision myself returning five nights in a row is a culinary gem called Full of Life Flatbread in Los Alamos, CA. This remarkable restaurant instantly reminded me of two of my all-time favorites for artisan pizzas: Bar in New Haven, CT, and Pizzeria Mozza in Los Angeles. Ben and I, you see, practically fell in love over a thin-crust white clam pizza, and any establishment offering a similar masterpiece immediately wins our devotion. Full of Life Flatbread, however, delivered far more than just an exceptional white clam, bacon, and leek flatbread. The flavors were perfectly balanced, the crust wonderfully crispy and slightly charred from the wood-fired oven, and the ingredients incredibly fresh and locally sourced.
Our appetizer alone was a revelation: a grilled asparagus and chanterelle mushroom salad, expertly tossed with savory prosciutto, delicately wilted frisée, and generous shavings of Parmigiano cheese. Each component harmonized beautifully, creating a dish that was as visually appealing as it was profoundly delicious, showcasing the bounty of the region. The local Grenache wine we paired with our meal was equally superb, its notes of red fruit and spice complementing every bite of our exquisite flatbreads. And the sausage, onion, and cheese flatbread we shared was pure comfort food perfection – robust, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying. Full of Life Flatbread, open only Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, is an absolute pilgrimage for any food enthusiast visiting the region, embodying the essence of fresh, artisanal California cuisine in a rustic, inviting setting.

For film buffs and wine enthusiasts alike, the Santa Ynez Valley offers the unique opportunity to embark on the famous ‘Sideways’ tour. Fans of the acclaimed movie will recognize many of the vineyards, tasting rooms, and restaurants depicted in the film, providing a fun, cinematic backdrop to their wine country exploration. While we didn’t follow the exact route, we did come close to experiencing one iconic spot: the Los Olivos Cafe, famously featured as the location where Miles drunk dials his ex-wife Vicki. This charming cafe is situated in the very heart of Los Olivos, an utterly adorable town that boasts not only fantastic lunch spots, like the aforementioned Panino with its gourmet sandwiches, but also an impressive array of charming wine tasting rooms and delightful boutique shops.
Los Olivos itself is a beautiful little town, a true hub of activity for wine lovers and those seeking a relaxed, upscale country experience. Its tree-lined streets invite leisurely strolls, punctuated by stops at diverse tasting rooms offering the region’s finest varietals, from bold Cabernet Sauvignons to delicate Pinot Noirs. The architecture is quaint and inviting, and the overall atmosphere is one of relaxed sophistication and convivial enjoyment. Panino, with its fresh, gourmet sandwiches, remains a firm favorite lunch destination, perfect for fueling up before or after a rewarding wine tasting session, or simply enjoying the pleasant ambiance of the town square.

The entire Santa Ynez Valley, encompassing charming towns like Los Olivos, Los Alamos, and Buellton, is a truly spectacular and understated part of California’s central coast. We’ve had the immense pleasure of visiting this region three times now, and each visit unveils new “must-try” spots and unique experiences, from hidden vineyards to artisanal eateries. Its natural beauty, characterized by gently rolling vineyards that stretch as far as the eye can see, and ancient oak-studded hills, is simply breathtaking and deeply tranquil. For those seeking a memorable wine country getaway that offers a more relaxed, authentic, and perhaps more budget-friendly alternative to the bustling Napa Valley, the Santa Ynez Valley is an absolute gem. It promises a fantastic time, filled with scenic drives, exquisite wines, gourmet food, and a genuine sense of escape. We even heard whispers of a rustic dude ranch in the area, a prospect we’re definitely eager to explore on our next adventure!
One of our most delightful afternoons was spent at Bridlewood Winery, located in the picturesque Santa Ynez. This winery is stunning, with expansive grounds that are simply perfect for picnicking, offering breathtaking views of the vineyards and surrounding hills. Their policy is straightforward and charmingly pragmatic: if you wish to picnic on their picturesque grounds, you’re kindly asked to enjoy their wine. A fair exchange, we thought, and one we happily embraced! We purchased a bottle of their superb Grenache, which perfectly complemented our gourmet sandwiches from Panino. Sitting amidst the lush vineyards, savoring delicious food and wine under the warm California sun, created a truly idyllic and unforgettable afternoon, a quintessential Santa Ynez Valley experience.

On Monday evening, for one of our last dinners in the valley, we dined at root 246, a highly acclaimed restaurant offering sophisticated yet approachable cuisine. We opted for a simple yet incredibly satisfying meal, starting with a perfectly executed Caesar salad topped with a rich, perfectly poached egg – a delightful and luxurious twist on a classic. For our entrées, we shared their exquisitely prepared burger, cooked to perfection, and a flavorful Mexican flatbread, bursting with vibrant ingredients. Every dish was prepared with precision and showcased fresh, high-quality, often locally sourced ingredients, resulting in a truly fabulous and memorable dining experience. root 246 undoubtedly earns its place as another must-try spot in the Santa Ynez Valley, offering a sophisticated yet unpretentious menu that appeals to discerning palates.

Farewell California: A Sweet End to an Epicurean Adventure
Finally, as our unforgettable long weekend drew to a close, we made our way back home, carrying with us a trove of cherished memories and satisfied appetites. But not before one last stop in Los Angeles to meet a dear friend for a delightful lunch at Cafe Midi, known for its vibrant atmosphere and fresh, appealing menu. Our culinary exploration concluded on an incredibly sweet note with dessert at Milk, where we savored some truly amazing cookies – rich, decadent, and utterly satisfying. These sweet treats were the perfect ending to an epicurean adventure that had spanned across Southern and Central California, touching on bustling cityscapes, quaint villages, and serene wine country. And look at Harry, isn’t he simply adorable, adding a final charming and heartwarming touch to our memorable journey?

This journey through the vibrant culinary scene of Los Angeles, the charming Danish village of Solvang, the artisanal heart of Los Alamos, the picturesque wine country of Los Olivos, and the wider Santa Ynez Valley was more than just a getaway; it was a deeply enriching experience filled with incredible food, stunning landscapes, and cherished moments shared with loved ones.
