Stepping into Paris is like entering a waking dream, a city that effortlessly blends timeless elegance with vibrant daily life. It’s challenging to articulate the sheer magic of the French capital without resorting to clichés, yet some truths simply must be acknowledged. Paris, with its enchanting allure and sophisticated charm, truly exceeded every expectation I held. From the moment I arrived, I was utterly captivated by my surroundings, finding beauty and wonder around every corner. Each stroll through its historic streets felt like an immersion into a living painting, where every winding alley, every grand boulevard, and every bustling market square offered a new discovery. The city’s architectural splendor, from the intricate wrought-iron balconies gracing classic apartment buildings to the charming outdoor cafes with their chairs facing outward, as if providing front-row seats to the daily spectacle of Parisian life, continually left me in awe. This city isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience, a symphony of sights, sounds, and aromas that delights both first-time visitors and seasoned locals alike.

During my week-long exploration of Paris, one thing became abundantly clear: the city’s commitment to preserving its historical integrity is remarkable. I kept anticipating new, modern constructions to break the ancient spell, but they simply never appeared. Instead, an exquisite tapestry of well-maintained, classic Parisian architecture greeted me at every turn, reinforcing the city’s enduring character and charm.

My seven days in Paris were a whirlwind of delightful discoveries, guided by a treasure trove of recommendations from friends and family. My journey was less about checking off monumental landmarks and more about delving into the city’s everyday rhythms – its bustling shops, unique sites, and, most importantly, its unparalleled culinary scene. While many flock to Paris for its world-renowned museums, I opted for a different kind of cultural immersion.
A small confession: I didn’t set foot inside a single museum. My focus was instead on the vibrant street life, the hidden courtyards, and the irresistible aromas wafting from bakeries and markets. And while I made it a point to snap the obligatory photo of the Eiffel Tower, I must admit that standing before that magnificent, towering structure truly took my breath away. Its iconic presence, even from a distance, is a powerful symbol of Parisian grandeur that resonates deeply.

My Parisian adventure was, first and foremost, a culinary odyssey. I indulged in an extraordinary array of French delicacies: crisp baguettes, flaky croissants in every imaginable flavor (chocolate, almond, and plain perfection), savory galettes, mouth-watering falafel, delicate crêpes, an assortment of exquisite cheeses, rich foie gras, tender sweetbreads, fresh tartare, buttery caramels, elegant éclairs, and vibrant macarons. Each bite was a revelation, a testament to the unparalleled quality of French ingredients and culinary artistry. But if I were forced to choose just one item, a single, sublime taste that I would miss above all others from my entire Parisian experience, it would undoubtedly be…

…the butter. Yes, the butter. Its rich, creamy texture and subtly complex flavor are simply incomparable. I even managed to bring some of this golden treasure home, navigating customs at Detroit with declarations and explanations – and let me assure you, every ounce of anxiety and effort was absolutely worth it for this taste of Paris to savor back home.

My culinary exploration began with a visit to Du Pain et des Idées, a boulangerie that consistently appeared on my list of recommendations for its superb breads. While their artisanal loaves were indeed delicious, the true highlight for me was their sacristan – an almond pastry so exquisitely light, buttery, and flavorful that it instantly became a favorite. It was the perfect introduction to the unparalleled quality of Parisian baked goods.

The star of the show, the irresistible sacristan:

Later that day, I met a friend for lunch at Mokonuts, a place that had already captured my attention thanks to Dorie Greenspan’s glowing review of their cookies in the New York Times Magazine just a week before my departure. What I didn’t anticipate was experiencing arguably the finest meal of my entire trip within those first few hours in Paris. The meal commenced with a delightful spread of creamy labneh, drizzled with olive oil, sprinkled with za’atar, accompanied by crisp radishes, and served with homemade mini pita breads. These incredible pitas, along with all the other exquisite baked goods, are the creation of Moko Hirayama, one half of the talented husband-and-wife team. While Moko masterfully handles all the baking, her husband, Omar Koreitem, is the genius behind their sensational savory dishes.

This dish was utterly sensational:

Moko, the talented baker: so adorable and genuinely welcoming.

My stay during the photography workshop was at Hotel Panache, a wonderfully stylish boutique hotel. My room offered a charming view of the bustling Parisian streets, providing a constant source of inspiration and a delightful backdrop to my time in the city. The hotel’s elegant design and comfortable atmosphere made it a perfect base for exploring.

On several evenings, I had the immense pleasure of dining with my amazing cousin, Betsy, and her husband, Alon, joined by their wonderful friends. These dinners were not just about the food, but about the joyous company and lively conversations. One particularly memorable evening led us to Sauvage, a restaurant that proved to be both incredibly delicious and wonderfully fun, with its natural wine selection and creative, seasonal menu providing the perfect backdrop for our gathering.

A pilgrimage to Blé Sucré was essential, and it delivered the pain au chocolat of my dreams – a perfect balance of buttery, flaky pastry and rich, melting chocolate that was pure bliss. This charming patisserie is a true testament to Parisian baking mastery.

Just around the corner from Blé Sucré, I stumbled upon the lively Marché d’Aligre, a wonderfully vibrant outdoor market. It’s a sensory feast, brimming with fresh produce, cheeses, flowers, and antiques, offering a true glimpse into the authentic daily life of Parisians. This market is a fantastic place to soak in the local atmosphere and discover unique treasures.

Merci proved to be a delightful discovery – an innovative concept store that combines housewares, fashion, and a charming eatery. It’s an ideal spot for finding unique gifts or simply enjoying its stylish, curated ambiance. The store’s thoughtful selection and aesthetic make it a truly inspiring place to browse.

Their salads were surprisingly delicious, fresh, and perfectly balanced, a great option for a light and healthy meal amidst all the rich French cuisine.

I particularly loved the lentils – their earthy flavor and perfect texture added a wonderful dimension to the meal.

La Trésorerie was another fantastic find for housewares, offering a beautifully curated selection of functional and aesthetically pleasing items for the home. It’s a treasure trove for those who appreciate quality craftsmanship and timeless design.

No culinary enthusiast’s trip to Paris is complete without a visit to E. Dehillerin, the iconic kitchen supply shop. This historic store is a cavernous wonderland of pots, pans, utensils, and every conceivable kitchen gadget, a true institution that has served generations of chefs and home cooks. Its old-world charm and extensive inventory make it an unforgettable shopping experience.

La Droguerie was one of two highly recommended crêperies, the other being Crêperie Breizh Café, which I didn’t get to visit. But La Droguerie offered a truly authentic experience, with its warm, inviting atmosphere and expertly prepared crêpes, embodying the simple pleasure of French street food.

I opted for the classic ham and cheese crêpe, and it was absolutely perfect – savory, satisfying, and utterly delicious. Zero regrets!
One memorable afternoon, I met a friend for a quintessential Parisian tea experience at Mariage Frères. This renowned tea house offers not only an incredible selection of exquisite teas, which were delightful, but also a wonderfully elegant atmosphere. The highlight of our visit, beyond the delicious tea, was an unexpected celebrity sighting: Jared Leto, discreetly enjoying his tea just a table or two away from us! It added an extra dash of excitement to an already charming experience.

A visit to L’As du Fallafel is an absolute must. While there’s almost always a queue, the wait is entirely worth it for their legendary falafel. Bursting with fresh flavors and textures, it’s a quintessential Parisian street food experience that delights the senses and satisfies deeply.

Maison Plisson is an exceptional spot for gourmet cheese, specialty foods, and, of course, that incredible French butter. It’s a beautifully designed market and restaurant, perfect for picking up high-quality ingredients or unique culinary gifts to bring home.

Next, I ventured into La Grande Épicerie de Paris, which truly lives up to its name as one of the most magnificent food markets I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. It’s an unparalleled temple of gastronomy, sprawling with every conceivable gourmet delight from around the globe, presented with an artistry that makes it a feast for the eyes as much as for the palate.

I had never tasted figs quite like these – bursting with sweetness and flavor, they were a revelation.

Oh hey, Notre Dame. Even after the devastating fire, its iconic silhouette against the Parisian sky remains a powerful and poignant sight.

Almost made it to Berthillon. This legendary ice cream parlor is always on my list, known for its incredible artisanal flavors, a perfect treat after a stroll on Île Saint-Louis.

One morning, I enjoyed a delightful breakfast with a friend at Hotel Amour. This trendy boutique hotel offers a wonderful atmosphere for a relaxed morning meal, blending chic design with a cozy vibe.

The baguette served was incredibly delicious – crusty on the outside, soft and airy within. This simple breakfast, as pictured below, featuring good bread, good butter, and good coffee, truly represents my idea of heaven. It’s a testament to how the simplest ingredients, when of the highest quality, can create the most profound culinary joy.

A few delightful nibbles were enjoyed at Au Passage, a rustic and popular spot known for its natural wines and small, shareable plates. The convivial atmosphere and thoughtfully prepared dishes made for a fantastic dining experience.

These shrimp were particularly memorable, perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor.

A visit to Épices Roellinger was a fragrant journey into the world of spices. This specialist shop, curated by the celebrated chef Olivier Roellinger, offers an incredible array of unique and high-quality spices from all corners of the globe. It’s a sensory delight and a must-visit for any passionate cook.

I couldn’t resist buying some of their exquisite spices, a perfect culinary souvenir to infuse my home cooking with the exotic flavors of Paris.

After my workshop concluded, I moved into a charming Airbnb in the elegant 8th Arrondissement. This decision allowed me to experience a different facet of Parisian life, living like a local in a beautiful neighborhood. The apartment was a comfortable haven, and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the area’s upscale boutiques and classic Haussmannian architecture.

On my second to last night in Paris, I had the incredible opportunity to reunite with Alon and Betsy for dinner at Racines des Prés. This restaurant offers a sophisticated culinary experience, characterized by inventive dishes crafted from exceptional seasonal ingredients, all served in an elegant and welcoming setting.

This particular evening was made even more special by the company of Patricia Wells, the esteemed food writer, and her husband, Walter. Both were incredibly lovely, and their presence added a layer of delightful conversation and insight to what turned out to be one of the best meals of my entire trip. The flavors, the ambiance, and the company converged to create an unforgettable dining experience that perfectly encapsulated the magic of Parisian gastronomy.

For my final night in Paris, I had plans to dine at Pizzeria Popolare, a recommendation I had received weeks before my departure. After a day spent tirelessly exploring the city, acquiring more butter and an extra suitcase to carry all my treasures, I returned to my Airbnb, feeling the delightful exhaustion of a well-spent Parisian day.

A quick brush of my hair – a small ritual before heading out for one last Parisian evening.

Then, I joined the bustling queue at Pizzeria Popolare, a testament to its immense popularity. When, even at 10:00 pm, the chances of getting a table seemed slim, I swiftly made a strategic pivot to…

…Pink Mamma, another fantastic establishment from the renowned Big Mamma group. This vibrant trattoria, known for its stunning multi-level decor and excellent Italian fare, offered a perfect alternative for my last dinner. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and the anticipation of a delicious meal quickly replaced any lingering disappointment from the earlier queue.

To start, I ordered the octopus salad, a fresh and tender dish that perfectly balanced the flavors of the sea with vibrant accompaniments.

Then came the mammargherita pizza – a gloriously cheesy, perfectly charred, and utterly satisfying classic. It was the ideal conclusion to my incredible culinary journey through Paris, leaving me with a sense of delicious contentment and absolutely no regrets.

Dear Friends, thank you for allowing me to share this personal chronicle of my Parisian adventures. Travel is not something I embark on frequently; indeed, I often find myself contentedly rooted at home, and I confess to a general dislike for flying. However, it is precisely when I am immersed in the experience of a new place that my wanderlust truly awakens, fueling a desire to see more, explore further, and embrace the unexpected. My hope is that future opportunities for such enriching journeys will arise. Until then, au revoir from a heart full of Parisian memories and a longing for future explorations. xo
